The Amazon Kindle cover that comes with the electronic reading device is rather inadequate with some things that will annoy someone who’s just spent a several hundred dollars on a high-quality piece of electronics. The original Kindle cover had even more problems, but the latest incarnation, still leaves some things that the Kindle owner might find annoying.

The most common complaint with the cover that comes with the Kindle, is the way that it keeps the eBook reader in place. While it has two slots, which you can slip your eBook reader into, there is a tendency for it to slip out, and if you’re not careful, it could hit the floor. As we know with all electronics, this is not an ideal circumstance. Many workarounds involving Velcro in strategic places have been suggested to keep the Kindle in one place when a person is reading.

There have also been a number of very good aftermarket companies offering stylish, high-quality solutions to the Kindle cover quagmire. Three higher quality brands are Strangedog, Stylzworld and Noreveusa

Amazon also has a new cover coming out at the end of the November called the M-edge cover, which is much anticipated. There are 12 different models that are genuine leather in various colors and compatible with an e-Luminator book light. If you own a Kindle, you’ll immediately recognize how a book light that connects and doesn’t wobble is a good investment for your Electronic Reading Device. There are also non-leather “Leisure Jackets” that sell for less, but on the whole the M-edge is a luxurious addition to the Kindle cover arena.

Strangedog

Strangedog offers handmade covers that are both beautiful and custom. He only makes a couple in each style and each is very well crafted and durable. He offers the Velcro option to hold the Kindle in place, and will even take fabric from the customer in order to make a cover to spec. There is a waiting period as he only makes a limited number of these per week. Strangedog take pride in his hand made covers, and the level of craftsmanship is excellent. Stylzworld

Stylzworld offers a cover that is made of unique cognac brown leather with a sparkling design on the inside. You will have to contact them if you live in the United States as they are currently looking for distributors and are mainly located in Europe.

Noreveusa

A traditional leather case/cover is offered from Noreveusa and comes in 3 colors. It has a clasp that closes and holds the Kindle steady. It has the same problems presented with the original Kindle, although the clasp and leather make it a nice Kindle cover to consider.

Amazon offers a few different cases that will protect your Kindle if a cover isn’t what you’re looking for. These other options include a Neoprene Sleeve Case with a screen protector, a travel package that includes a leather case and travel book light, and a black neoprene case that’s good for travel. However according to the word in the Kindle forum, it appears that most people are waiting on the M-edge genuine leather executive case as the best buy in Kindle covers for Christmas.

You will need to leverage the Audible Manager for downloading and subsequently copy the file to Kindle via USB port on the PC. This eliminates the need for printing altogether.

Kindle allows you to easily download text files for future use. All it takes is just 45 seconds to download even massive text files!

x. Files not supported

The Kindle does not ensure compatibility with Mobipocket files which have been DRMed. Also the Kindle will not support PDF file types – not even after you convert the file!

In the last few months we witnessed the launching of Amazon’s Kindle. The marketing strategy was fierce; the new device was being advertised on major TV shows and on the news everywhere, sales skyrocketed in the first few hours. People that weren’t familiar with e-ink based technology thought this was the greatest innovation ever; Although the technology wasn’t new: Sony had been in the market for almost 2 years with their PRS-505 e-reading device. Even though they were the pioneers in implementation of the e-ink technology they didn’t receive the attention the Kindle got. Why? Because Sony’s marketing was weak. They focused on other products such as the PS3 and Blu Ray players. They didn’t think the niche for e-book readers was that large, but they were wrong: Amazon hasn’t been able to meet the demand for kindles. Currently the wait list is of three weeks (reminds me of the Wii euphoria) and the resale price on Ebay goes up from $800.

Is kindle up to the hype? Only if you live in the USA that is. If you live elsewhere forget about buying e-books right from the device itself or loading your own e-books or documents to it. Apple learned that their biggest consumers for their online music store Itunes would be in Europe and it proved right. Europe has a more stable economy and the income per capita is greater. There are currently 17 virtual stores for European customers. Amazon, although it ships paper books to almost all no-conflict zones in the world (about 150 countries) shipping for their e-book reader is limited to the US. territory only.

Sony is also selling inside their e-reading devices in the US. alone but differently from the Kindle this fact hasn’t been an obstacle for people from other countries to get one of those. The Sony online store (that looks like itunes) for e-books has limited access to US. residents like Amazon. The only difference between those technologies is the flexibility of Sony’s. The PRS-500 and its successor the PRS-505 can be connected via USB to a computer and you can load almost any .rtf (rich text format) and any .pdf you can think of but with the limiting feature that those letter-sized e-books and documents will display a tiny font in the paperback sized 6” screen making them sometimes unreadable.

The solution for adapting documents and non Sony Store e-books for the PRS-505 didn’t come from Sony (due to a conflict of interests: they prefer you buy the e-book again from their store) but from another company, the one that produces the PRS-505 formatting software “Michelangelo”.

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.com, began this year’s Holiday season with the release of the Amazon Kindle. This device is a groundbreaking step in increasing the popularity of eBooks. It boasts an electronic-paper display to mimic the look of real paper, wireless connectivity, more than 88,000 books, newspapers and magazines available for purchase, and the capability to email Word documents and pictures. But has Amazon really figured out how to revolutionize the way people read?

The Kindle’s electronic-paper display is not so revolutionary, considering this has been seen before in other products, such as the Sony Reader. The display is also limited to black and white, and is not backlit. This is a far cry from a full-color, high gloss magazine, or even a blog. Also, the free wireless connectivity, WhisperNet, operates on an EVDO network and is therefore only available in the US, and tends to have limited reach and reliability within the US. Amazon charges for every document or picture you receive through email on the Kindle, and does not offer PDF support. The Kindle has a single proprietary format, MOBI. From the leader in the online bookstore industry, you may also expect to have the largest selection of eBooks to choose from for the Kindle, but that is not the case. Amazon only offers 88,000 eBooks for sale, while some smaller companies can offer up to 154,000 eBooks, almost twice as many as the Kindle and nearly eight times as many as Sony.

The biggest question being raised about the Amazon Kindle is about its price. Technological mobility always carries a hefty price tag, but is $400 for a grayscale eReader a worthy price? Keep in mind that this $400 does not include the cost of books, magazines, blogs, and newspapers. Other stores have been recognized for having the best prices on the web for eBooks with no monthly fees, so you can enjoy the convenience of having thousands of titles at your fingertips without the hefty price tag from Amazon. These stores also offer eBooks that are compatible with all PCs, Macs, laptops, PDAs, Windows Mobile PocketPC, Smartphones, Blackberry and even iPods. In addition to the price is the amount of customer service Amazon has shown customers in the past. There has been two instances where Amazon has bailed on eBook customers in the past year. First in 2006 deleting the backed-up bookshelves of eBook customers, and then in 2007 shutting down its Mobipocket servers for ten days. In each occasion no warning or explanation was given to customers. This history demonstrates a clear lack of concern for end customers, concerned first and foremost with the benefit of volume. Amazon’s customers can be discarded because they can afford to buy new ones with major advertising and marketing dollars. Smaller companies like BooksonBoard and Fictionwise care about each customer because it’s their practice.

So has Amazon really found the answer? Not yet. While Amazon’s valiant attempt to revolutionize the industry are definitely appreciated, there are just too many wasted opportunities that the Kindle fails to take advantage of; perhaps Amazon’s efforts will inspire Steve Jobs or even Google to come up with a true revolutionary eReader.

Kindle is out and sales are heating up, but how hot? Mum’s the word on details, but the buzz remains. Specifics: Amazon’s Kindle is an e-reader that holds 200 e-books, 19 newpapers and almost 400 blogs. Got enough reading material? Although estimates indicate they’re selling 40K units a month at $350 a pop, who’s buying? I don’t know anyone yet. But I live in Buffalo. We’re a meat-and-potatoes kinda place. No matter how wonderful this e-reader is, the price is not cheap. Heck, even laptops are less expensive. Still, like most electronic gismos, the cost is sure to go down.

Another concern is the actual number of books available for download. Publishing companies are scrambling to digitize back list books. But will there be water water everywhere and not a soul to drink? Surveys indicate that 82% of book readers prefer paper books. No surprise. Toss a book in your pocket, briefcase, purse and you’re good to go – no batteries, no cords, no online connections, no worries the device could be stolen. While most downloads cost $4 to $10, add that to the expense of the reader and you got some serious cash outlay. Especially when the public library is within walking distance.

Recently, I became convinced that e-book downloads were terrific for the international market where the cost of shipping books is prohibitive. So I uploaded two of my books to LuLu and one to Amazon’s Kindle. Uploading a PDF file to Lulu was seamless, quick and easy. The upload to Kindle was problematic. The PDF conversion was a mess: text hither and yon, weird spacing, dropped lines. Apparently, this is not unusual because specific directions followed that if the manuscript needed further formatting, it should be downloaded and reformatted in HTML. Huh? Anyways, I converted the PDF to Word and resubmitted. The file still had problems but paled to the PDF upload. I was able to make the corrections but it took another hour. Clearly some bugs remain.

In any event, Amazon is spearheading a movement, but will they be the only ones? Apple, Microsoft and any other computer-savvy company could take on the charge. Not to mention the other e-readers who have been schlepping around for the past ten years. Meanwhile online Barnes and Noble no longer offers e-books. Odd.

The end game? Stay tuned. This could be another revolution a la Gutenberg (they scoffed at moveable type, metal letters too) or end up like helium airship travel. Ka Boom.

Earlier this year, Amazon, the largest outlet for POD books, announced that at least five copies of books would have to be warehoused at Amazon before they would sell them. To avoid this expense, Amazon advised publishers to have books printed by Amazon’s own company, BookSurge, not Lightning Source. This drew much consternation from writers and publishers. Naturally it seemed coercive, and possibly illegal given anti-trust laws. But should we be surprised?

Over the years Amazon has been selling online books in new and innovative ways. They were the first to utilize search tags, book previews, author profiles, customer reviews, author blogs… the list goes on. They were also the first to welcome publishing writers. Did they anticipate what a boom this would be? Certainly they must have noticed trends as their book sales enjoyed double-digit growth every year. Could we really expect them to sit on their laurels?

With a huge author/publisher base, Amazon saw the possibilities that flanked both the publishing and selling ends. They jumped in. To secure the publishing end Amazon bought BookSurge, a subsidy, then created CreateSpace, a Lulu-like clone. To have writers flock to them they ran a contest. Thousands came, and although there was only one winner, a huge publishing base resulted. To maximize the selling end, Kindle was born. Kindle is Amazon’s eReader. Now Amazon is publishing, marketing, and selling books in different formats. Suddenly from cradle to grave, Amazon declares it is the guiding light for all.

So how concerned should a publisher be?

My thoughts: The publishing field continues to morph, adapt and it’s difficult to predict the future. There are many players. Apple may partner up with Lightning Source and Barnes and Noble, a company that has retooled itself and doubled sales in the past year. Ebooks may play a huge role in sales, or maybe not. X-presso machines may print books at your local grocery store, thereby obviating online sales altogether. Amazon’s decision to play a forceful hand is, in my opinion, just one of many surprises to come. Amazon is making strides early, but are other heavy hitters on vacation? I think not. The bottom line: competition is good (I can’t believe I said this, but somebody slap me if I’m wrong), and we, as publishing writers, can only gain.

In 2001 Apple launched the iPod. Why bother, everyone said, there were already hundreds of different digital music players at the time and most people dismissed the idea out of hand. Three hundred and ninety-nine dollars for a music player? Too expensive. No FM radio or a microphone. It will never catch on. Well, as we know now, it turns out they were wrong on all counts – and how. Apple shares were $9.51 the day before the launch – today they are around $160. But enough of the history lesson. Here are five reasons why the Kindle is the next must-have gadget akin to the iPod or PSP.

1. It actually addresses a real problem

Who needs to carry 80 books around with them? Well, I don’t, and I’m sure most of you don’t either. What about a thousand – now you’re just being silly! Sony’s failed e-book reader boasted enough memory to carry around a small, or even medium sized library. Great if you’re a professor who needs to reference his life work while on the move, but just a bit over the top for most of us. Me, well I just want to read one book at a time. Still, that doesn’t mean to say that when I finish my book I always go to sleep – sometimes I want to read another. Sometimes I’m in the mood for something different to the book I just finished. Sometimes it was even so good that I want to read something else by the same author. Well, Kindle is the first ebook reader with its own cellular wireless connection that lets you get new books anytime, almost anywhere whenever you like. It’s not wifi so you don’t need to find hot spots — it’s like a cell phone. Magazines and newspapers – no problem, your digital paperboy will deliver them fresh to your (digital) doorstep in an instant.

2. It has a ready made library of good quality cheap material

Any new gadget will ultimately fail or succeed on the fuel that drives it – content! Well, with Amazon throwing its weight firmly behind the Kindle, you needn’t worry about the availablility of material. Until now, some ebook readers have failed miserably in this vital aspect with narrow choices of material, and downloads often costing more than their traditional paperback equivalents. Kindle scores on price – most of its material costs around 10 bucks and many are less – this is cheaper than a normal book. Wait, I hear you cry, but the cellular wireless connection must cost a fortune. Nope – its included in the price of the device and the downloads. Sp, what about periodicals? Big savings are to be had here as well as publishers throw themselves onto the digital bandwagon. A year of the Wall Street Journal in print is $249 versus $9.99 a month ($120 a year) via Kindle – and you can still read it in the loo!

Getting your own documents onto the Kindle can be done via email but this does, admittedly incur an extra charge, although it is just 10 cents a go. The email service supports several formats of open-source books as well as Microsoft Word and text-based, the only real omission that I would like to have seen included is PDF support. No doubt this will be forthcoming, and there are workarounds available in any case

3. Jeff Bezos is a proven visionary

Ok, its not a rock solid guarantee of success bit just look at the guys track record. First he built his online superstore beating out thousands of more established competitors – anyone not heard of Amazon here – I thought so. Amazon.com got so many things right, including the important focus on reader reviews, cheap shipping and giant selection. I’d put my money on him to make this to a success.

4. Its smart and well designed

As I’ve pointed out its packed with gadgets like free wireless cell connection a real keyboard to let you search in a book or document, page turning buttons on both sides of the screen – Ned Flanders will definitely be stocking these in the Leftorium. But another major decision will also help Kindle take off. It’s not hanging off your computer. You don’t need to sync it with a computer. Purchases are backed up online by Amazon so you can delete and recover any book you bought. Basically, it does everything it was designed to do in a simple elegant manner – remind anyone of a certain MP3 player?

5. It’s cool

There are potentially millions of consumers who will buy Kindle for this very reason. Just like PSP’s, IPods and IPhones before it – the take up of the next cool gadget is normally a huge success if the distributors get it right, and when it come to product distribution Amazon rarely fail. It is not very far away that instead of searching for newspapers in the morning you will have to just switch on your e-book reader. The new gadgets, Amazon’s Kindle $ Sony Reader 505, have revived the long under performing e-book readers. These devices has encouraged the use of electronic paper display (EPD) technology.

The EPD displays currently being used are based on electronic “ink” developed by E Ink Corp. The ink used is bi-stable and is very energy efficient. The advantages of EPD displays over LCD displays include the lower requirement of energy and that the reflective surface of the EPD displays makes them readable even in daylight. In future the e-paper displays will be flexible as the EPD technology will use plastic substrates instead of the glass substrates.



EPD screens resolution is rapidly improving. The current generation of e-book readers use active-matrix displays and can offer relatively high resolutions. The Kindle screen displays 167 ppi or pixels per inch, while Seiko Epson Corp. recently showed off a 13.4 inch displaying about 385 ppi, that uses E Ink’s electrophoretic ink on a silicon thin-film transistor glass substrate.

A number of consumer products, such as watch dials, cell phones, credit cards, security cards, etc are coming up using the EPD technology. The technology is also being used in instrumentation applications, like the capacity meter on Lexar JumpDrive USB drives, and in signage.

However redrawing an image on an EDP takes longer than it does on an LCD screen. It makes this technology unfeasible for animation. Because EPDs are reflective, signage needs to be illuminated in dark areas. And screen contrast is much lower than it is with backlit LCD screens.
