No, the internet doesn't cost anything. That answerer was either misinformed or works for Sony. :-P

Some folks think that using NowNow and browsing the internet might *eventually* cost money, but right now they're "experimental" and don't cost a dime. The wireless cost is built into the book downloads and the price of the Kindle itself. I think that your girlfriend will indeed save money on books, especially if she also uses free resources for ebooks. ... BTW, you're a very good boyfriend. :)

If you're still worried, look at it this way: The Kindle is intended to sell Amazon's books, so why would they charge you extra to search their store or download their books? Even samples are free (which I love) because they increase the chance that you'll buy the full book.

I hope that puts your mind at ease. Tell your gf to have fun! :)

There are no contracts and no bills shown on the Amazon website for using it. You will get billed for downloads though.

With Kindle, instead of paying for the Internet and getting free content, you're getting free Internet and paying for the content -- in this case, books from Amazon.com.

The Kindle is a prime example of how technology is destroying the world. With all the evidence coming out proving that too much exposure to digital information is changing brain development, and not for the better, it should be illegal for things like that to exist. It's destroying people's attention span, ability for complex critical thought, and shortening long term memory among dozens of other terrible side effects (Not just the Kindle, over exposure to electronic media in general). Not to mention the reliance and dependance on technology it is creating. I met a kid in class the other day who didn't know that we had been able to keep records of back issued newspapers before the advent of the internet, and further more didn't realize that we didn't used to have to pay any dues to look at them. You try to access an article from ten years ago on a major newspaper's website now and they want to charge you anywhere from $0.99 to $3.99. It's absurd. I hope evidence comes out showing that Kindle causes cancer in the eyes or something so this foolishness will just go away. I'm sick of it.

I didn't print off my class schedule the other day, and the computer system went down. I called the registrar to get the first class location (Because I can never remember for the first week) and they couldn't get my schedule because the computer system went down! Come on! That's ridiculous.

To more directly answer your question: No, I don't have a Kindle. I think it's designers and the owners of Amazon are in league with Satan, and am pretty sure that all an updated version of it will do is add another nail in the coffin of human progress. Don't do it, CK1!

I don't have a Kindle, but I have been considering it. There are three things that have stopped me thus far: 1-I like the feel of a real book in my hands when reading, 2-I have a tendency to want ever more books and the Kindle may make it too easy for me to buy too many, and 3-the price is a bit high.

Even with these drawbacks, I'm still debating whether or not to buy one. I haven't seen any information about an updated version coming out, which would increase my interest. If another version were to come out, most likely possible kinks would be corrected. (Have you found any flaws so far?)

Having the Kindle and loving it is a good recommendation - unless you work for Amazon. :)

***Edit: Reason returned...microfiche...long division without the aid of electronics...whew! ;-)

Yes, you can easily search for specific words with the keyboard. (It saved my **** with a Greek-lit paper on metaphors.) Right now it's a universal search (all of your books), and then you can click on the book that you're interested in. The search results show up as snippets, so you can choose the passages that you actually need.

The free wireless service works perfectly, and you can buy books directly from the device. (I've bought books at 2am, and was so happy that I didn't have to wait until morning to visit a bookstore ... or even get up from the sofa.) The internet was important to me because I **** dragging around a laptop, and I haven't been disappointed. It operates on EVDO (like a cell phone on a data plan), and the wireless can be turned off with a switch if you want to save battery power or are boarding a plane. BUT make sure that you're in the coverage area: .

If you're a lit major, you should definitely be aware that you can add non-Amazon texts to your device. (You can add them through a computer connection or an SD card for free, or send via e-mail for 10 cents.) I've used my Kindle to read scholarly articles and classic books for free, which is really helpful as a student. You can check out sites like Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org ) for tons of free books, and I've started an online library of Kindle-specific books at: .

You might be surprised by how many functions are useful beyond just the book-reading aspect. The Kindle allows for "highlighting" and note-taking, which are accessible from the text and are collected in a single file on the Kindle. VERY helpful for writing papers, although it's not yet perfect (it's a dumping ground organized only by the time of the notation).

The next version will probably be better, but I don't think that it'd be worth waiting for. The current one gets wireless updates, so new features can be added to the first-generation device whenever they're done. There's no telling how long it'll take for version 2.0 to appear, and this one will meet your needs. :)

(And yes, I love my Kindle. I'm sure it's hard to tell. :-P)

No. Pictures don't work well on the Kindle. Best only for novels or newspapers without pictures.

Ok, so do you recommend buying the Kindle right now? I'm a big reader and I was looking forward to getting it but it looks like if you're a fast reader it would interrupt you alot to have the screen flash all over every time you turn such a tiny page...

... are you satisfied with it?

I'm very satisfied with it. The flash bothered me initially, but not it doesn't. The only drawback are the locations of the buttons that accidentally get hit.

The good thing is that you can adjust the size of the fonts to get more on the page.

I do recommend it and am still glad I bought it.
