Once developers made it possible for mini-computers to talk to their PC counterparts they began to understand that the ebook could find a home in a variety of portable applications.

The stand-alone ebook readers are still available, but many consumers are finding the ability to run multiple applications with one device an alternative they enjoy.

Many ebook downloads are provided as a Portable Document File (PDA) while others are not. The variety of ebook publishing software makes access to a variety of reader software necessary.

Common ebook Reader Software

Adobe Acrobat: This software is a widely used application for the reading of PDA files. What makes this most attractive to consumers is the fact that it comes as a free download.

Microsoft Reader: This product is another free download and can be used with a PC device either stationary or portable. Many existing computer devices already have it loaded into the system prior to device purchase.

Weasel Reader: This free software product reads zTXT files for Palm Pilots and supports bookmarks.

Palm Reader: This product comes in both a free version as well as a professional paid version. The pro version allows you greater control over the look of the ebook fonts. It also provides complimentary ebooks and a dictionary.

Micropocket Reader: The Micropocket Reader offers a free pro version that supports a variety of ebook formats, but also includes the ability to view PowerPoint presentations over your portable devices.

The uBook Reader: The uBook ebook reader does require a fee for download, but supports a variety of files including PDB, PRC, HTML, TXT, and RTF. This product also supports most major photo files.

The use of any of the above programs or even several unlisted ebook reader software applications call allow you to download your favorite ebooks and take them on the road. Now, the portability of an ebook could be linked to your phone, MP3 player and portable PC making the most of your time away form the home or office.

Kindle: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device

B Hopkins asked:

The Amazon Kindle cover that comes with the electronic reading device is rather inadequate with some things that will annoy someone who’s just spent a several hundred dollars on a high-quality piece of electronics. The original Kindle cover had even more problems, but the latest incarnation, still leaves some things that the Kindle owner might find annoying.

The most common complaint with the cover that comes with the Kindle, is the way that it keeps the eBook reader in place. While it has two slots, which you can slip your eBook reader into, there is a tendency for it to slip out, and if you’re not careful, it could hit the floor. As we know with all electronics, this is not an ideal circumstance. Many workarounds involving Velcro in strategic places have been suggested to keep the Kindle in one place when a person is reading.

There have also been a number of very good aftermarket companies offering stylish, high-quality solutions to the Kindle cover quagmire. Three higher quality brands are Strangedog, Stylzworld and Noreveusa

Amazon also has a new cover coming out at the end of the November called the M-edge cover, which is much anticipated. There are 12 different models that are genuine leather in various colors and compatible with an e-Luminator book light. If you own a Kindle, you’ll immediately recognize how a book light that connects and doesn’t wobble is a good investment for your Electronic Reading Device. There are also non-leather “Leisure Jackets” that sell for less, but on the whole the M-edge is a luxurious addition to the Kindle cover arena.

Strangedog

Strangedog offers handmade covers that are both beautiful and custom. He only makes a couple in each style and each is very well crafted and durable. He offers the Velcro option to hold the Kindle in place, and will even take fabric from the customer in order to make a cover to spec. There is a waiting period as he only makes a limited number of these per week. Strangedog take pride in his hand made covers, and the level of craftsmanship is excellent. In this plug-n-play world, Strangedog is a one of a kind vendor who prides his work over mass production.

Stylzworld

Stylzworld offers a cover that is made of unique cognac brown leather with a sparkling design on the inside. It is genuine leather, tri-fold cover that has cutouts for credit, business and memory cards as well as other types of documents. It has an innovative holding system as well as a cutout in the back for the on/off buttons. You will have to contact them if you live in the United States as they are currently looking for distributors and are mainly located in Europe.

Noreveusa

A traditional leather case/cover is offered from Noreveusa and comes in 3 colors. It has a clasp that closes and holds the Kindle steady. It has the same problems presented with the original Kindle, although the clasp and leather make it a nice Kindle cover to consider.

Amazon offers a few different cases that will protect your Kindle if a cover isn’t what you’re looking for. These other options include a Neoprene Sleeve Case with a screen protector, a travel package that includes a leather case and travel book light, and a black neoprene case that’s good for travel. However according to the word in the Kindle forum, it appears that most people are waiting on the M-edge genuine leather executive case as the best buy in Kindle covers for Christmas.

Kindle: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device

Jonny Rae asked:

There are a number of things you should consider when buying a portable e-book reader. There are many different models on the market so you must make sure that you read all of the product reviews and buying guides before you purchase your device to make sure that you get the right portable reader system for you.

Here are some tips on what you should look out for when researching your portable e-book reader.

You want to make sure that it has a good resource of where you can get your digital books etc from. Any database that supports an e-book reader should have thousands of current and past titles to choose from.

Be careful about the wireless charges that may apply as some companies will charge you for the actual wireless network charges on top of your download charge. Ideally you should look for one that has no monthly service plans or wireless charges.

It should be compact in size and light in weight so that it can easily be kept in your purse or bag. It should not weigh any more that an average paperback book.

Any good portable e-book reader will also allow access to popular U.S. and international newspapers and magazines

The display of your portable reader system should have a sharp, high-resolution screen that feels and looks like a real book. You want a wireless device that does not require you to plug into a computer system with complicated cables and synching. With wireless technology you can shop on your portable e-book reader from anywhere having your chosen book or publication delivered automatically to your device in under a minute.

Another good feature to look out for is free book samples. This feature allows you to read the first chapters of your chosen book for free before you decide to download it to your portable reader system and if the book is not to your taste, you should be able to download unlimited free ebooks before you buy.

While the features above are a necessity you should also look out for a portable e-book reader that allows you access to online blogs to allow you to keep a ****** of the latest words in politics, business, technology, sports and entertainment Email should also be accessible with the ability to send (.JPG, .GIF, .BMP, .PNG) docs to your device.

My name is Jonny Rae and I hope you have found this article interesting and informative. Portable e-book readers have become very popular and are a fun and useful addition to your collection of digital devices. Once you have used one you will never want to read a paperback again. An outstanding resource for a portable ebook readers can be found at my blog under the following link. http://best-portable-ebook-reader.blogspot.com/

Kindle: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device

Scott Lindsay asked:

Ebooks are the electronic equivalent to regular hardback or paperback books. The end result is just as portable and extremely versatile.

Ebook readers are developed knowing you may likely wish to read in low light conditions, so the portable ebook reader of choice allows you to read at night - something that is much harder to do with a traditional book.

A simple definition of an ebook is an electronic file that contains literature and accompanying graphics. Ebooks are typically downloaded online in a password-protected environment.

What a brick and mortar store is to traditional books, online ecommerce is to ebook distribution. The method of propagating ebook material is by paid file transfers and then viewed with an applicable ebook reader software program.

You will notice that just as a typical book has cover art, so too do ebooks. Many ebooks are set up to have a similar look and presentation to traditional books. There may be several reasons, but the predominate reason is simply because this is how most people are used to viewing books. It is possible to download an ebook that has sound effects of a page being turned as you advance pages.

Ebook developers have worked hard to blend the familiar with practicality. In the end, readers should find little adjustment is needed in making the switch from paper books to electronic.

Obviously many readers will continue to purchase traditional print books, but will add ebooks as a means tapping into this portable technology. This phenomenon is much like the change from 35mm cameras to digital. There were many holdouts that thought the digital camera was a passing fad, but in time many consumers added a digital camera to their collection and systematically dropped the use of 35 mm. I suppose the biggest difference is that regular book publishing and ebook publishing co-exist a bit better than my camera illustration.

The popularity of ebooks extends beyond portability. In most cases consumers will spend significantly less for the ebook purchase than a traditional book. The primary reason for that is you are not paying to have the book shipped to you and you do not have to pay expenses associated with actually printing the book. In essence this is a win/win for both the author and the consumer. The product arrives when you want it, does not typically require sales tax and can be stored for current and future reading in a space saving electronic file.

What is an ebook? A revolutionary way to publish and distribute ideas through a medium that is more accessible to both consumers and potential authors.

Get Your Own Automated Wordpress Blog Like This One

Ian Middleton asked:

You might not have discovered digital readers yet.

Well in a nutshell it is like a paper-back, only it is an electronic reading device. It is about the same size as a small paper-back book and it looks very much like real paper and print as you read it.

Would you like to benefit from digital readers now?

The really cool thing is that instead of having just one book, some digital readers are capable of holding a couple of hundred eBooks, magazines or daily newspapers. Can you imagine how it would feel to take a small library away with you on your trips? You can carry it in your coat pocket or bag………….Oh, and weighing in at less than a pound in weight?

How can I increase my eBook sales?

Oprah just endorsed a major brand of digital eBook reader on her show very recently. Actually, saying she endorsed it is an understatement. She actually said it was, “her new favorite thing.” Do you understand what that is going to do for digital reader sales? Through the roof this Christmas! So combine her glowing endorsement with other glowing reviews you can find elsewhere, plus your eBooks and you have a golden opportunity to cash in this Christmas.

Just imagine checks coming in from a major online book seller in time for you to perhaps buy your own digital reading device for Christmas? Get in now and get people buying your books and get one up on the competition so you are already in the front of their mind.

You can tap into this lucrative market for your eBooks and profit very quickly with just a bit of effort and some inside info.

Digital readers are getting so much attention now, that the buyers of eBooks cannot help but see the advantages of carrying their own personal library around to read where and when they choose. They will always have the book they want and when they want it. Access to thousands of publications is instantaneous.

Most NY Times best sellers are available for less than ten bucks for digital readers!

Are you up for increasing the profits from your eBooks?

Would you like to harness the power of a major online retailer to help you make more money? Well you can, yes you, but you need to take action to do so.

If you have an eBook, that’s great. If you do not, don’t worry as you can get one written for you for a few hundred dollars on almost any subject you care to mention by simply posting an idea and some chapter headings on an online writer’s site and people will bid to do the writing and research for your digital reader format book.

All you need to do is give it a title, edit and add a cover and voila! You now have an eBook ready to upload to a digital reader site in time for Christmas.

If you do not fancy that idea, then see how many private label rights you have on your computer and compile the content of two or three and make one eBook to see for very little layout. You can even call it your own in most cases.

Don’t get left behind as the really astute eBook authors are already using the power of digital readers to get their books in front of a new generation of readers. This market is going to explode as thousands of new people search for information each day.

Don’t delay. Market you eBooks in a new way today to help explode your sales.

Kindle: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device

The contents are read on personal computers or by the use of hardware devices called ebook readers.

The first thinking was triggered off by Michael Hart in the 1970`s. He reasoned that the greatest value of a computer should be not merely computing but also storing material, retrieving it and searching for knowledge kept in libraries. The birth of the ebook era started with the copy of Declaration of Independence. From these humble beginnings kicked off Project Gutenberg. Today there are 20,000 free texts and more than 100,000 books available. Each month 3,000,000 ebooks are downloaded - undoubtedly impressive figures in the history of ebooks. When it made its debut in the web the material was easily shared and stored. Quickly the idea picked up and large scale dissemination began to take place.

At first ebooks covered special areas and were meant to be documents to be shared by those in the field. The subject varied from technical manuals to manufacturing techniques. Soon stuff appeared meant only for adults. The market was thus fractured and led rise to ideas of making it more universal and reachable.

Many formats of ebooks appeared and spread supported by branded software. But the market became more fragmented with multiple readers using multiple formats. Ebook failed to become a mainstream product. A dual movement developed. There were ebook publishers who distributed old and rare books while new writers and publishers struck out on their own offering online books creating new readers and clients. Catalogues became available on the net and the message of ebooks began to spread to the public.

Soon it was romance stories that captured the popularity zone. It sometimes meant `guilty pleasure` for the general public. Such types of works could be easily located and bought online from the confines and privacy of one`s own home. It was also easy to read such stuff without others knowing about the guilty tastes. The world did not quite know about the success of such `romantic books`.

But human civilization has a tendency to separate the grain from the chaff and soon big strides began to be taken in the diffusion of knowledge through ebooks. It has led to the spawning of new publishing houses and manufacturers of electronics. More ebook hardware readers are being released in the market that will be easy for the public pockets and convenience. They will apply for portable computers, smart-phones and even game consoles.

Slowly the public are seeing people reading ebooks on laptops or on portable hand-held computers in eateries and coffee parlours. On the mobile phone one can read them in installments by downloading the same. In Japan the sales have jumped astronomically. Now one can find the type of books one wants - the choice of ebooks is widening. Daring new authors are entering the hallowed zone of books and reading.

Those aiming to publish ebooks have many options as regards file format. There are heated debates about which format is the best. For works like dictionaries, references and the like ebooks are ideal for easy searches and cross references can be made. On an average 500 ebooks can be stored in one CD. They never run out of print and authors can continue to earn royalties. Some of them can be read not only in dim light but also in total darkness because of some internal device. The ebook is easy to hold and does not require use of both hands. Reproduction costs are negligible.

Get Your Own Automated Wordpress Blog Like This One

James Kara Murat asked:

If you have just heard about the entire latest buzz surrounding the e-book reader Kindle from Amazon, you need to know more. Here are the top 10 aspects about Kindle almost everyone needs to know!

i. MP3 playing

The Kindle device from Amazon has the amazing ability to play all the MP3 songs which you would have downloaded into the internal storage mechanism. Capacities of the internal storage are around 180 MB in space. You could also store these MP3 songs in the allocated SD card slot. You can play the songs in random shuffle and choose to listen to songs in the background while you read the e-book!

ii. DRM support

The Kindle comes with DRM support by means of support for file types of extensions .AZW. It also is compatible with Mobipocket books of the unprotected varieties. Therefore file types like .MOBI, .TXT, .PRC, Word as well as .HTML are all supported by the Kindle. You can transfer files via USB or via email. No more need to print!

iii. Kindle Now Now

This is a new feature introduced by Kindle which enables a powerful search mechanism. By means of a query mechanism you can search for almost anything you wish for absolutely free of cost! This search facility is powered with the help of Mechanical Turn from Amazon which is a distributed system of work.

iv. Blog subscription

You can avail blog subscriptions by paying a meager 2 dollars every month! Besides this, you also get access to a 14 day trial period. For no additional cost, you get to browse the blogs directly via the ‘Basic Web’ which is a browser provided for free. You only pay for access to the RSS feeds but not for surfing the web.

v. Font types supported

Kindle primarily supports two kinds of fonts namely the Neue Helvetica and the Caecilia. These are provided by Linotype. Book texts are all provided in the default Caecilia font. However, other than reading, you can select from 6 font types.

vi. Ergonomics

While the Kindle may not have great aesthetics what with a no-so-great looking color, the shape of the device is very ergonomically designed.

vii. No scroll keys

If you wish to navigate to the next page or further below, there are no scroll down keys provided in the Kindle. To move across content or even scrolling on the web pages you will need to use the page forward keys and the back button for this.

viii. Audible e-books

You can use the Kindle from Amazon to play out audible e-books. However the ‘whispernet’ service provided by means of the EVDO internet connection does not support downloads of such audible e-books on air. You will need to leverage the Audible Manager for downloading and subsequently copy the file to Kindle via USB port on the PC. This eliminates the need for printing altogether.

ix. Text file download

Kindle allows you to easily download text files for future use. All it takes is just 45 seconds to download even massive text files!

x. Files not supported

The Kindle does not ensure compatibility with Mobipocket files which have been DRMed. Also the Kindle will not support PDF file types – not even after you convert the file!

Kindle: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device
